Synopsis

Marco Pagot is a former Italian air force ace who has, through means the film never explains, become a pig. Working as a bounty hunter chasing sky pirates over the Adriatic in the years between the wars, he keeps his distance from a country sliding into fascism and from the woman who has waited years for him to say anything honest. When an American rival shoots him down, a young mechanic named Fio rebuilds his plane and refuses to let him keep hiding. Every choice he makes is shaped by a war he survived and others did not.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Porco Rosso began as an in-flight short for Japan Airlines before expanding into a feature, which partly explains its unusual tone and structure. It is the most adult-oriented of Miyazaki's films, engaging directly with fascism, survivor's guilt, and middle-aged disillusionment while retaining his signature enthusiasm for aircraft. The film has a particularly strong following in France and Italy, and its protagonist's self-imposed curse remains one of the director's most affecting metaphors. Its engagement with fascism and guilt makes it his most adult work by some distance.
