Story

Synopsis

Satoshi and his fellow travelers arrive in the idyllic island metropolis of Altomare to participate in the prestigious Pokemon Water Race. While exploring picturesque aquatic canals, Satoshi befriends a mysterious girl who turns out to be Latias, a legendary dragon guardian shape-shifting as a human. Alongside her brother Latios, she protects the city and the mystical Soul Dew relic. When flamboyant thief duo Annie and Oakley capture Latios to control the ancient defense mechanism, catastrophic tidal waves threaten to submerge Altomare, forcing a supreme sacrifice to preserve peace.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Screened theatrically in July 2002 under the direction of Kunihiko Yuyama at OLM, this fifth cinematic feature served as the final theatrical outing for the original series cast including Misty and Brock. Inspired by the romantic architecture of Venice, Italy, the film features hand-painted architectural backdrops, vibrant watercolor textures, and an acclaimed European accordion-infused musical score. Latios noble self-sacrifice stands as one of the most poignant emotional climaxes in the history of the animated franchise.
