Madhouse animated this thirteen-episode dark fantasy anime, which aired in summer 2015. Directed by Naoyuki Itou and written by Yukie Sugawara, the anime adapts Kugane Maruyama's bestselling light novel series illustrated by so-bin. The production achieved massive international popularity, establishing Ainz Ooal Gown as one of the definitive antiheroes of modern fantasy anime. Featuring an intense symphonic heavy metal soundtrack and iconic theme songs performed by OxT and MYTH & ROID, the series won widespread critical acclaim for its meticulous world-building, ruthless pragmatic warfare, and darkly comedic subversion of conventional heroic fantasy tropes.
This by the numbers series is as lifeless as its undead protagonist, and does nothing to stand out in a crowded genre of notable contenders for your time.
