“Five stars for me, four from Aiden, but I fully agree with him: if the concept of communicating by tasting the saliva of another disgusts you, please feel free to subtract as many stars as your disgust requires.”

Mysterious Girlfriend X
Nazo no Kanojo X · 謎の彼女X · 2012
An uncanny supernatural bond forged through daily drool sharing rituals.
Synopsis
Akira Tsubaki is an ordinary high school student whose mundane routine is derailed by the arrival of Mikoto Urabe, an antisocial transfer student who sleeps on her desk and carries a pair of scissors in her underwear. After school, Akira impulsively tastes a drop of drool Urabe left on her desk, only to fall violently ill with an unexplainable withdrawal fever days later. Urabe visits him and cures his condition with another taste of her saliva, revealing that their drool forms an intimate telepathic link through which they share emotions, memories, and physical sensations. Together, they begin an eccentric romance.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Produced by Hoods Entertainment and directed by Ayumu Watanabe, *Nazo no Kanojo X* adapts the unconventional romantic coming-of-age manga created by Riichi Ueshiba, serialized in Afternoon. Airing in spring 2012 for 13 episodes, the series was distinguished by its retro 1980s aesthetic, nostalgic film grain texture, and evocative classical musical score by Shinkichi Mitsumune. While its central saliva motif presented an intentionally bizarre premise, the production handled the burgeoning adolescent intimacy with genuine tenderness, psychological nuance, and artistic maturity. The anime remains a unique, celebrated cult classic within romantic television animation.

“Despite my general positivity, I don't feel that MGX represents a great four stars but it still does enough right, pushes enough envelopes, that I feel it impossible to deny the show its due. For all of you who didn't just take my advice earlier, remove as many stars as you feel necessary according to how disgusted the premise makes you feel.”
