Story

Synopsis

High school freshman Ganta Nakami is constantly irritable and exhausted, suffering from severe chronic insomnia that he keeps hidden from his judgmental classmates. While searching for cardboard boxes in the school's abandoned astronomy observatory, an eerie rumor-haunted hideout, Ganta discovers popular classmate Isaki Magari fast asleep inside an old storage closet. To his relief, Isaki confesses that she suffers from the exact same sleepless condition. Turning the quiet observatory into their private nocturnal sanctuary, the two sleep-deprived teenagers revive the school's defunct Astronomy Club, taking up nighttime astrophotography while sharing quiet conversations beneath starry skies.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
LIDENFILMS animated this critically acclaimed thirteen-episode romantic drama, which aired in spring 2023. Directed by Yuuki Ikeda and written by Rintarou Ikeda, the anime adapts Makoto Ojiro's beloved manga serialized in *Big Comic Spirits*. Set in Nanao City in Ishikawa Prefecture, the production captured real-world regional locations with astonishing photorealistic precision, emphasizing nocturnal ocean breezes, acoustic crickets, and starry night skies. Supported by an evocative musical score by Yuki Hayashi, the anime received universal praise for its naturalistic adolescent dialogue, gentle romantic progression, and deeply sensitive, empathetic treatment of insomnia, grief, and adolescent vulnerability.
