Story

Synopsis

Since invading Earth in 1973, ruthless insectoid extraterrestrials known as the BETA have devoured billions of human lives, pushing humanity to the brink of extinction. In 2001, multinational military alliances assemble top-tier pilots at Yukon Base in Alaska to develop next-generation Tactical Surface Fighter mecha. Arrogant Japanese-American test pilot Yuuya Bridges is assigned to the joint development unit under strict imperial flight supervisor Yui Takamura. Overcoming nationalistic animosities and bitter ideological clashes, the multinational pilots must forge unbreakable airborne synergy before the unstoppable BETA swarm overwhelms humanity's defenses.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers

Co-produced by animation studios ixtl and Satelight, *Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse* aired on Japanese television in July 2012 under directors Takayuki Inagaki and Masaomi Ando. Serving as a tactical military spin-off light novel to age's renowned visual novel epic, the twenty-four-episode series highlighted real-world geopolitics, brutal alien encounters, and realistic mechanical physics. The show became celebrated among mecha enthusiasts for its visceral depictions of battlefield carnage, tense cockpit tactical maneuvering, and intricate surface fighter combat choreography.

THEM Anime Reviews

Nicole MacLean 2012

A bit of a weak three stars, since it has many, many problems with plotting and pacing, but the characters and the greater-than-expected care taken with their backstories help the show quite a bit. Stay away if you don't like mecha or if you can't handle gore.

After tantalising us with some interesting moments early on, Total Eclipse drops all of that potential in favour of a disappointingly generic major storyline. Go and watch Macross Plus instead.

Disappointing, but only because it isn't what I wanted it to be.
