Story
Synopsis
Three years after the conclusion of the Jovian War, humanity enters an era of interstellar prosperity driven by the Hisago Plan's Boson Jumping transportation gateways. Now sixteen years old, prodigy Ruri Hoshino serves as the composed captain of the state-of-the-art battleship *Nadesico B*. When a terrorist splinter faction called the Jovian Successors hacks the warp relays and assassinates research teams, Ruri mobilizes her veteran crew. Investigating the attacks, she encounters a mysterious black mecha piloted by a vengeful Akito Tenkawa, who was thought dead alongside his wife Yurika. Together, they confront dangerous cybernetic conspiracies to reclaim stolen lives.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Written and directed by Tatsuo Sato and produced by studio Xebec, *Martian Successor Nadesico: The Prince of Darkness* was released in Japanese cinemas in August 1998. The film served as a direct sequel to the acclaimed 1996 television anime, adopting a darker, more dramatic tone that explored the psychological costs of war. Winning the prestigious Animage Anime Grand Prix award for 1998, the feature was lauded for its breathtaking mechanical battles, intricate hard sci-fi concepts, and Ruri Hoshino's compelling evolution into an authoritative military commander.

Three stars. There's certainly a lot of effort put into this movie, and production quality is above average. Unfortunately it's let down by a confusing plot, and the fact that it doesn't end anything. Subtract a star if you don't like the change to a series mood. Me? I'm sticking to the *baka baka* of the original.
