Story

Synopsis

Self-proclaimed background character Kazuhiko Nukumizu enjoys a peaceful solitary high school life reading light novels in quiet corners. That tranquility evaporates when he accidentally witnesses popular classmate Anna Yanami get rejected by her childhood crush in a family restaurant. Forced into paying for her massive comfort-food bill, Nukumizu finds himself dragged into the dramatic heartbreaks of various rejected heroines, including track runner Remon and shy literature club member Chika. Acting as an exasperated sounding board and accidental confidant, Nukumizu helps these vibrant losing heroines pick up the emotional pieces of their shattered romances.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Based on Takibi Amamori's celebrated light novel series illustrated by Imigimuru, *Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!* was animated by A-1 Pictures under director Shotaro Kitamura. Airing twelve episodes in summer 2024, the production became one of the year's biggest critical darlings, praised for its top-tier expressive character acting, photorealistic background art, and refreshing deconstruction of rom-com archetypes. Its exceptional commercial and streaming performance solidified its status as an instant modern high school classic.
