Synopsis
In the year 2059, the Macross Frontier space colonization fleet journeys through the Milky Way searching for habitable planets for humanity and its Zentradi allies. Alto Saotome is a rebellious high school flight trainee and former kabuki actor who longs to soar through real skies. When the fleet is suddenly ambushed by terrifying bio-mechanical alien insects known as the Vajra, Alto pilots a variable fighter to defend the city ship. Entangled in a romantic triangle with superstar galactic diva Sheryl Nome and aspiring idol Ranka Lee, Alto battles alien swarms whose minds respond to human songs.

Studio Satelight animated this twenty-five-episode mecha romance series, which broadcast in 2008 to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the *Macross* franchise. Conceived and chief-directed by franchise creator Shoji Kawamori alongside director Yasuhito Kikuchi, the show was an enormous commercial and cultural triumph across Japan. Featuring a historic, multi-platinum musical score composed by Yoko Kanno, the anime's vocal tracks performed by May'n and Megumi Nakajima dominated the Japanese Oricon music charts. The series is celebrated for perfectly harmonizing the classic Macross trinity of variable transforming fighters, sweeping romantic triangles, and pop music.

I'll admit that the ending really bothered me and a show that relied so heavily on its overwhelming competence needed to finish better than that. That said, I'd recommend this to anyone - it has romance, it has action and most of everything in between. Undoubtedly, Macross Frontier is a very good show and well worth your time.
