Story

Synopsis

Following the passing of Mark Williams, an eccentric criminal mentor who spent decades stealing the world greatest treasures, Arsene Lupin III receives a bizarre final challenge. Mark will only bestow the mythical Trick Diamond if Lupin successfully returns six famous stolen artifacts to their original museum vaults within seven days. Joined by Jigen and Goemon, Lupin undertakes a backwards crime spree, breaking into impenetrable fortresses to deposit the treasures rather than steal them. However, a merciless Moscow mafia syndicate led by the ruthless gangster Ivan strives to seize the diamond for global destruction.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Broadcast on Nippon TV in August 2003, *Lupin III: Operation Return the Treasure* was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and directed by Jun Kawagoe. Turning the conventional heist premise upside down, the special delighted audiences with its inventive reverse-theft concept and brisk, comedic ticking-clock momentum. Scored with energetic big band arrangements by longtime franchise composer Yuji Ohno and animated with fluid, vibrant action cuts, the production provided Japanese television audiences with an engaging blend of international travel and lighthearted slapstick.
