Story

Synopsis

Atsuko Kagari enrolls at Luna Nova Magical Academy because a witch named Shiny Chariot inspired her as a child, which is an embarrassing reason among students from established magical families. Akko has no aptitude, no lineage, and no ability to fly a broom, and her enthusiasm consistently makes situations worse. When a class excursion into a dungeon goes wrong, her complete disregard for procedure turns out to be exactly what the situation requires from someone. Every rule she breaks turns out to be the only available path forward.

Directed by Yoh Yoshinari and produced by Studio Trigger as part of the Young Animator Training Project, this short film was successful enough to fund a crowdfunded sequel and eventually a full television series. Its energetic character animation and Yoshinari's distinctive expressive style earned it enormous goodwill, particularly internationally, where it became one of Trigger's calling cards. The franchise remains among the most beloved original properties the studio has produced to date. Its enormous international goodwill helped establish the studio's reputation almost immediately.
