Story

Synopsis

In the futuristic, experimentally planned city of Sugomori, high schooler Katsuhira Agata lives in complete apathy, incapable of feeling physical pain. One afternoon, an enigmatic classmate named Noriko Sonozaki pushes him down a stairwell and reveals that he has been enrolled in the secretive Kizna System. Katsuhira finds himself surgically bound to six other wildly mismatched teenagers, forcing them to share all physical injuries and emotional anguish equally. If one teenager suffers a blow, every member feels the sting. To survive their forced connection, these isolated youths must navigate buried trauma and genuine intimacy.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio Trigger produced this original television anime series, directed by Hiroshi Kobayashi in his full directorial debut. Famed screenwriter Mari Okada, renowned for *Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day*, penned the emotional script, while manga artist Shirow Miwa crafted original character designs adapted by Mai Yoshioka. Airing in spring 2016, the series featured an iconic electronic theme song by the rock duo Boom Boom Satellites. The anime explored philosophical themes of empathy, communication, and human isolation, becoming a cult favorite for its striking visual direction and evocative color palette.
