Synopsis

In the idyllic coastal town of Onomichi in the 1980s, ordinary middle school student Yurie Hitotsubashi casually informs her best friend over lunch that she has miraculously become a Shinto deity overnight. Guided by pragmatic shrine priestess Matsuri and quiet classmate Mitsue, Yurie navigates her newfound divine status while still dealing with middle school homework and an unrequited crush on a classmate. From summoning typhoons to appease neighborhood gods to attending celestial conventions of spirits, Yurie discovers that being a goddess requires gentle empathy, patience, and a helpful heart.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Airing sixteen episodes on TV Asahi in 2005, *Kamichu!* was produced by Brain's Base and directed by Koji Masunari, with original concept work by Besame Mucho. Set against the real-life scenic coastal hills of Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture, the anime was lauded for its nostalgic Showa-era charm, whimsical Shinto folkloric realism, and gentle, heartwarming coming-of-age storytelling. Winning the Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival, the production stands as an enduring classic of slice-of-life fantasy animation.
