Synopsis
Hyakkaou Private Academy is a prestigious institution for the children of Japan political and economic elite, but academic grades and athletics carry zero weight. Instead, student hierarchy is decided entirely by high-stakes gambling games held after classes, with debtors reduced to subhuman status as house pets. The school sadistic order is upended by the arrival of Yumeko Jabami, an ostensibly sweet transfer student who harbors a compulsive, borderline psychotic addiction to risk. Rejecting money, status, or safety, Yumeko gambles purely for the ecstasy of danger, exposing student council cheats in electrifying psychological showdowns.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Based on the gripping psychological thriller manga written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura, *Kakegurui* was animated by studio MAPPA and directed by Yuichiro Hayashi, airing in summer 2017. The twelve-episode television series gained international notoriety for its grotesque, hyper-exaggerated facial expressions, intense voice acting, and luxurious jazz soundtrack composed by Technoboys Pulcraft Green-Fund. Its unflinching theatricality and unpredictable high-risk games made it a runaway streaming hit, establishing Yumeko Jabami as one of modern anime most captivating antiheroes.
