Story

Synopsis

In an ancient Scandinavian wilderness, brave youth Horus retrieves the legendary Sword of the Sun from a giant stone golem named Rock. Guided by his dying father wishes, Horus travels north to unite fractured human settlements terrorized by the malevolent ice demon Grunwald. Settling in a beleaguered fishing village, Horus earns local respect by defending villagers against predatory silver wolves. However, when enigmatic singer Hilda arrives carrying deep demonic secrets, Horus must bridge deep-seated communal mistrust and forge the Solar Sword to vanquish Grunwald frost-bound tyranny.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Released in July 1968 by Toei Doga, this landmark cinematic masterpiece was directed by Isao Takahata with Hayao Miyazaki serving as key scene designer and animator. Renowned in animation history as the foundational turning point toward mature storytelling and psychological character complexity, the production overcame severe studio friction and labor strikes. Hilda internal torment between loyalty and love broke conventional animated villain archetypes, paving the stylistic and philosophical foundation for future Studio Ghibli works.
