Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid

Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid (Andersen Douwa: Ningyohime) was made by Toei Animation to mark the 100th anniversary of Andersen's death. Tomoharu Katsumata directed. It opened in Japan in March 1975 as part of the Toei Manga Matsuri (Toei Cartoon Festival). The film stays close to the fairy tale and keeps its tragic ending, and it gives the story's unnamed mermaid the name Marina. It begins and ends in live action in Denmark, finishing on the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen. A dubbed version reached the United States in 1979 under the title Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid, using the spelling of Andersen's name from that release.
