Synopsis
As the turbulent Bakumatsu era approaches its tragic culmination, the Shinsengumi samurai find themselves overwhelmed by westernized imperial armies armed with modern firearms and artillery. Retreating northward to Aizu and Sendai, commander Toshizo Hijikata and his loyal comrades refuse to abandon their bushido convictions, fighting against inevitable obsolescence. Accompanying the regiment, young Chizuru Yukimura witnesses the profound sacrifices made by the warriors as several ingest the cursed Water of Life to become supernatural Rasetsu. Despite dwindling supplies and mounting casualties, the remaining commanders march toward Hokkaido for an honorable final confrontation.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
One by one, valiant Shinsengumi officers fall in battle defending their retreats, with Souji Okita, Harada, and Heisuke succumbing honorably to wounds and the vampiric Rasetsu curse. At the northern stronghold of Goryokaku in Hakodate, Hijikata drinks the elixir to match demonic warlord Kazama Chikage in single combat. Amidst falling cherry blossoms and artillery fire, Hijikata defeats Kazama with his blade, earning the demon lord's deepest respect. Bleeding heavily from his mortal injuries, Hijikata collapses peacefully in Chizuru's arms under the blue sky, resting at last as Japan's samurai epoch officially fades away.
