Story

Synopsis

Simon lives underground in a village that has never known open air, digging tunnels while his self-declared brother Kamina insists that a surface world exists and that they are going to reach it. When a giant mecha crashes through the ceiling followed by a girl with a rifle, everything Kamina claimed turns out to be true, and considerably more dangerous than advertised. The film compiles the first stretch of the series into a theatrical retelling with new animation, covering the ascent to the surface and the war that follows.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Produced by Gainax and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, this compilation film reworks the opening arc of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann with substantial new footage and an altered climax. The original series is regarded as one of the most influential mecha anime of its decade, celebrated for its escalating scale, its unapologetic sincerity, and animation that prioritizes energy over technical precision. Its creative team went on to found Studio Trigger, whose subsequent work carries the same visual sensibility, making this franchise a foundational reference point for modern action animation.
