Living peacefully on the isolated floating island of Zinkenstill, brave youth Gran dreams of exploring the skies to reach Estalucia, the mythical Island of the Astrals mentioned in his father's farewell letter. His quiet life ends when he rescues Lyria, an enigmatic girl pursued by the militaristic Erste Empire for her divine ability to summon ancient primal beasts. Fatally wounded during an imperial ambush, Gran is revived when Lyria bonds her life force to his soul. Flying aboard the airship Grandcypher with a loyal crew, Gran embarks on a sweeping aerial adventure across endless clouds.

Produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Ayako Kurata and Yuuki Itoh, this television anime adapts Cygames's blockbuster mobile fantasy RPG. Airing twelve episodes in spring 2017, the production captured the lush aesthetic of Hideo Minaba's art design and featured an epic orchestral soundtrack co-composed by legendary musician Nobuo Uematsu and Tsutomu Narita. Praised for its grand scale and high production values, the series was followed by an additional television season produced by MAPPA in 2019.
