Synopsis

Following the television series, the film shifts weight toward Akihiko Kaji and Haruki Nakayama, whose long, unresolved living arrangement with Ugetsu Murata has been quietly destroying all three of them for years. Ritsuka and Mafuyu's relationship continues developing alongside, but the film's real subject is the older pair and the impossibility of loving someone who is genuinely bad for you. The music remains central, and the resolution refuses to make anyone's choice look straightforwardly correct. Every scene between the older pair is uncomfortable in ways the series never smooths over, and the resolution refuses to pretend anyone involved chose easily.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Hikaru Yamaguchi at Lerche and adapted from Natsuki Kizu's manga, the first given film continues a franchise praised for treating its boys' love romance with genuine emotional seriousness and for the strength of its original music. Its willingness to portray a destructive relationship honestly, without resolving it neatly, set it apart within the genre. The film was well received by readers who considered the Akihiko and Haruki material the strongest part of the source manga. Its focus on the adult characters gave the franchise considerably more emotional range.
