Story

Synopsis

Directed by Rintaro and based on Leiji Matsumoto's magnum opus, this space opera follows impoverished orphan boy Tetsuro Hoshino on futuristic Earth, where human elites have replaced their bodies with immortal cybernetic parts and hunt mortals for sport. After his mother is brutally murdered by the sadistic cyborg Count Mecha, Tetsuro meets Maetel, a mysterious blonde woman who gifts him a free boarding pass for the Galaxy Express 999, a legendary space locomotive traveling to the planet Andromeda where mechanical bodies are supposedly granted for free in exchange for her companionship.

Guided by Maetel and assisted by pirate Captain Harlock and Emeraldas, Tetsuro confronts Count Mecha in the Time Castle, killing his mother's murderer. Arriving on the mechanized homeworld Prometheum, Tetsuro discovers Maetel's mother, Queen Prometheum, harvests human minds to convert them into living building materials for mechanical empires. Refusing cold immortality, Tetsuro throws Prometheum into the planet's core, destroying the mechanized empire. Maetel kisses Tetsuro goodbye at the train platform, revealing she is an eternal guide of youth who must depart, leaving Tetsuro to return to Earth as a proud mortal.
