In an industrial steampunk world governed by the scientific laws of alchemy, brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric commit alchemy's ultimate taboo: human transmutation, in a desperate attempt to resurrect their deceased mother. The ritual fails catastrophically, taking Edward's left leg and Alphonse's entire physical body. Sacrificing his right arm to bind Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor, Edward receives mechanical automail prosthetics and becomes the youngest State Alchemist in history. Together, the Elric brothers travel across the militarized nation of Amestris, searching for the fabled Philosopher's Stone while uncovering devastating governmental conspiracies and monstrous Homunculi.

Studio Bones animated this historic fifty-one-episode television adaptation, which aired between October 2003 and October 2004. Directed by Seiji Mizushima and written by Shou Aikawa, the series adapted Hiromu Arakawa's manga before branching into an original, darker narrative trajectory with Arakawa's blessing. The show became an unprecedented global anime landmark, dominating Western television on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and winning the Television Award at the Animation Kobe. Featuring iconic rock themes by Asian Kung-Fu Generation and L'Arc-en-Ciel, the production cemented Bones' reputation as an animation powerhouse and concluded in the theatrical feature *The Conqueror of Shamballa*.
