Studio 3Hz produced this acclaimed original thirteen-episode magical girl anime, which broadcast in fall 2016. Directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama in his visionary full directorial debut, the series became a masterclass in modern digital hand-drawn animation, showcasing experimental artistry by talented young animators. Each episode adopted distinct genre homages, transitioning effortlessly between psychological horror, retro giant mecha battles, fairy-tale fantasy, and post-apocalyptic wasteland survival. Featuring an evocative synth-pop score by TO-MAS SOUNDSIGHT FLUORESCENT FOREST, the production earned enduring status as an artistic tour-de-force among contemporary animation connoisseurs.
Flip Flappers is perhaps the ur-example of potentially great late 2010s anime being held back from greatness by the anime industry's unexamined fetishistic infatuation with youth and self-reference. Some fans may remove as many as two additional stars depending on how much fan service annoys them.
