Synopsis
Two years after the brutal battles against the Festum alien lifeforms, the secluded Japanese island sanctuary of Tatsumiyajima has returned to fragile peace. Kazuki Makabe lives with partial blindness and physical deterioration caused by piloting his mecha, patiently awaiting the promised return of his friend Soushi Minashiro. When an unmanned submarine carrying an enigmatic, amnesiac Festum youth named Misao Kurusu drifts onto the island shore, Tatsumiyajima is placed on high alert. Misao seeks to understand human coexistence, but hostile Festum factions launch an all-out assault against the island's protective energy shield.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Misao possesses the core of the Mir Festum and desires to experience human emotional warmth, but the aggressive Festum hive mind coerces his crystalline powers into attacking the island settlement. Kazuki climbs back into the cockpit of the Fafner Mark Sein, fighting alongside Misao to communicate humanity's desire for existence without mutual slaughter. Misao sacrifices his physical vessel to absorb the hostile Festum hatred, neutralizing the assault. Through this act of selfless coexistence, Soushi's consciousness is successfully reborn onto Tatsumiyajima, fulfilling his eternal promise to return to Kazuki and protect their home.
