Story

Synopsis

In a post-apocalyptic future where nuclear devastation has transformed Japan into the scorching Great Kanto Desert, survival belongs only to the ruthless. Known across the dunes as the Desert Punk, diminutive mercenary Kanta Mizuno will take on any dangerous job, from hostage extractions to bounty hunts, provided the pay is right. Equipped with an array of smoke grenades, grappling lines, and trick shotguns, Kanta relies on unrepentant cowardice, deceit, and tactical cunning rather than noble heroics, frequently clashing with ambitious apprentice Kosuna and rival mercenary vixen Junko.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Airing twenty-four episodes on CBC from October 2004 to March 2005, *Desert Punk* was produced by studio Gonzo and directed by Takayuki Inagaki. Adapted from Usune Masatoshi gritty, satirical manga, the anime stood out among post-apocalyptic science fiction series for its cynical anti-hero protagonist, realistic firearm mechanics, and dark, irreverent comedy. Accompanied by a gritty, blues-infused rock soundtrack composed by Keiichi Oku, the production achieved international cult popularity for its bold, unapologetic depiction of survival.
