Story

Synopsis

Disillusioned high school delinquent Tomoya Okazaki walks apathetically through life, alienated by a fractured relationship with his alcoholic father. His aimless routine alters when he encounters Nagisa Furukawa, a frail, earnest girl repeating her senior year due to persistent illness. Moved by her dream to resurrect the abandoned school drama club, Tomoya helps Nagisa recruit members and stage an emotional theater performance. As genuine romance blossoms into young adulthood, the couple faces devastating adult challenges. Tomoya must confront profound heartbreak and personal grief to discover the enduring power of family.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers

Directed by legendary animator Osamu Dezaki and produced by Toei Animation, this September 2007 theatrical feature adapts Key celebrated visual novel masterpiece *Clannad*. Predating Kyoto Animation renowned television adaptation, Dezaki interpretation brings his signature dramatic staging, postcard memories, and watercolor visual techniques to the narrative. Condensing the expansive visual novel into a ninety-minute cinematic journey focusing tightly on Tomoya and Nagisa relationship, the film offers a uniquely stylized, melodrama-infused exploration of romance and fatherhood.

THEM Anime Reviews

Tim Jones 2007

There's quite a bit of blood here and there throughout the movie, and some of the later parts of the movie can lay down the dramatic aspects of its characters at times. There's also a boy visibly peeing on a wall at one point of the movie as well. No fan service, but I still would only recommend it for teenagers and older.
