Synopsis

Directed by Makoto Shinkai, this lush mythological fantasy centers on Asuna Watase, a resourceful middle school girl living in an isolated mountain village following her father's death. Spending her afternoons listening to strange, enchanting melodies on a homemade crystal radio gifted by her father, Asuna is rescued from a monstrous beast by an enigmatic boy named Shun, who claims to hail from the underground realm of Agartha. When Shun mysteriously dies, Asuna's substitute teacher, Mr. Morisaki, reveals that Agartha holds the gate to the land of the dead, where lost souls can be resurrected.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Pursued by military agents, Asuna and Morisaki descend through the gateway into Agartha, accompanied by Shun's younger brother Shin. Morisaki reaches the Gate of Life and Death, trading his eye to resurrect his deceased wife Lisa's soul inside Asuna's body. Horrified, Shin shatters the resurrection vessel, returning Lisa to the afterlife and saving Asuna. Morisaki is consumed by grief, but Asuna helps him understand that learning to say goodbye is the true essence of living. Bidding farewell to Shin, Asuna returns to the surface world with renewed reverence for life.
