A fascinating coming-of-age premise is marred by inordinate and irrelevant dialogue that over-explains to try and make up for the obvious lack of visual direction. It will appeal to young folk interested in classical art, but no-one else.

Blue Period
ブルーピリオド · 2021
A popular high school delinquent discovers passion through intense fine art.
Synopsis
Yatora Yaguchi is a popular high school student who smokes, drinks with his delinquent buddies, and easily scores high grades, yet feels entirely hollow and unfulfilled inside. One morning, he is mesmerized by a magnificent, large-scale oil painting created by an older student in the school art club. Inspired to express his authentic inner feelings for the first time, Yatora paints a vivid blue depiction of early morning Shibuya. Consumed by artistic passion, the novice painter dedicates his life to passing the brutally competitive entrance exam for the prestigious, tuition-free Tokyo University of the Arts.

When we see Yatora painting, we see his broad-brush strokes, but seldom his detail work- and maybe that's a metaphor for some of the problems with the show in general. The show's such a mixed bag, and like I said, it's too often dominated by Yatora's feelings of inadequacy.
