Synopsis
Black Jack is an unlicensed surgical savant whose superhuman medical skills are matched only by his astronomical service fees. Bearing deep facial scars and a brooding demeanor, he travels the world operating in secret clinics, luxury estates, and remote wildernesses. While the established medical establishment condemns him as a greedy mercenary, Black Jack takes on impossible terminal cases rejected by traditional hospitals. From bizarre parasitic neurological syndromes to ethical dilemmas involving corrupt politicians and dying refugees, the rogue surgeon cuts through biological decay to challenge the moral boundaries between life and death.

Tezuka Productions produced this legendary ten-episode original video animation series between 1993 and 2000, adapting Osamu Tezuka's iconic manga masterpiece. Directed by the legendary auteur Osamu Dezaki, with character designs and chief animation direction by Akio Sugino, the OVA series is celebrated as the definitive audiovisual adaptation of Tezuka's medical antihero. Dezaki brought his signature dramatic visual flourishes, including postcard memories, dramatic lighting, and split-screen compositions, to create a mature, atmospheric masterpiece. The production received universal critical acclaim for its cinematic weight and deeply philosophical exploration of medical ethics.
