Synopsis

Drawing inspiration from classical Japanese folklore and kabuki theater, this evocative horror anthology presents three distinct tales of vengeance, obsession, and supernatural dread. The first arc dramatizes Yotsuya Kaidan, the tragic betrayal and wrathful haunting of Oiwa by her deceitful samurai husband. The second, Tenshu Monogatari, explores the forbidden romance between a falconer and a forgotten forgotten princess who leads a forgotten castle spirit court. The final segment, Bakeneko, introduces an enigmatic Medicine Seller who uses an enchanted sword to exorcise a malevolent cat spirit terrorizing a wealthy samurai clan.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Broadcasting eleven episodes on Fuji TV prestigious noitaminA programming block in early 2006, *Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales* was produced by Toei Animation. The anthology featured three distinct animation styles across its directors, with Kenji Nakamura groundbreaking visual direction in the Bakeneko arc attracting immense critical praise. Emulating vibrant woodblock print textures and traditional ukiyo-e aesthetics, Nakamura final segment proved so popular that it prompted the greenlight of the celebrated full-length spinoff anime series *Mononoke* the following year.
