Astro Boy
Tetsuwan Atom · 鉄腕アトム · 1963
The pioneering mechanical boy who launched the modern anime television revolution.
Synopsis
In the technologically advanced year 2000, brilliant roboticist Dr. Tenma creates a human-like robot boy named Astro in the image of his deceased son Tobio. Distraught when he realizes the mechanical creation can never naturally grow or experience human biology, Tenma cruelly sells Astro to a predatory traveling robot circus. Rescued by the compassionate humanitarian Professor Ochanomizu, Astro is granted civil rights, a loving robot family, and an education. Utilizing his atomic-powered flight, superhuman strength, and sincere moral conscience, Astro dedicates his existence to fighting crime, rescuing civilians, and fostering peace between humans and sentient androids.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Created and produced by the God of Manga, Osamu Tezuka, at his studio Mushi Production, the original 1963 *Tetsuwan Atom* is the historic landmark that established the commercial television anime industry in Japan. Premiering on Fuji TV on January 1, 1963, and running for 193 black-and-white episodes, the series pioneered limited animation production techniques, three-frame holds, and merchandise licensing models still used today. Broadcasting internationally under the title Astro Boy, the program achieved massive worldwide acclaim and demonstrated the narrative potential of animated serial storytelling, paving the path for all subsequent Japanese animation.

“So yeah, pick it up well aware of its limitations, and you should enjoy this reboot of the first atomic boy.”
“OK, bottom line time here, kids. How do I rate it? I'm not even sure what CRITERIA to use. Its importance as the FIRST anime series available in the U.S. must go into the rating; but its limitations as a kid's show- and its obvious budgetary limitations-weighed pretty heavily with me.”
