Story

Synopsis

In the futuristic year 2063, space travel has become a routine reality. A group of nine mismatched high school students departs for a week-long wilderness camping trip on the distant planet McPa. Shortly after arriving, the teenagers are engulfed by a bizarre glowing sphere of light, which teleports them five thousand light-years into the deep vacuum of uncharted space. Miraculously discovering an abandoned starship called the Astra nearby, the students take refuge inside. Led by the athletic, optimistic Kanata Hoshijima, the stranded crew embarks on a perilous survival voyage across unknown planetary systems, while uncovering a saboteur in their ranks.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio Lerche animated this gripping twelve-episode science-fiction mystery anime, which broadcast in summer 2019. Directed by Masaomi Andou and written by Norimitsu Kaihou, the anime adapted Kenta Shinohara's award-winning manga, which won the prestigious Manga Taisho in 2019. The production made anime history by utilizing extended-length episodes, including a forty-eight-minute premiere and finale, to deliver a complete, unhurried adaptation of Shinohara's entire storyline. The series won widespread critical acclaim for its tight narrative pacing, breathtaking planetary ecology designs, shocking plot twists, and heartwarming themes of teamwork, chosen family, and courageous perseverance against impossible cosmic odds.
