Arpeggio of Blue Steel -Ars Nova-
Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova · 蒼き鋼のアルペジオ ‐アルス・ノヴァ‐ · 2013
A rogue submarine crew battles sentient warships to restore humanity oceans.
Synopsis
Rising sea levels and global warming have reshaped the planet, but an even greater catastrophe looms: the Fleet of Fog, a mysterious armada of sentient, super-advanced warships modeled after historic naval vessels. Armed with devastating weaponry, the Fog obliterates human navies and blockades global trade routes. Seventeen years later, young naval cadet Gunzo Chihaya is contacted by I-401, a Fog submarine whose humanoid mental model, Iona, chooses to defect to human command. Operating together with a loyal crew, Gunzo and Iona wage tactical naval warfare to establish peace between species.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Broadcast from October to December 2013, *Arpeggio of Blue Steel -Ars Nova-* was produced by SANZIGEN and directed by Seiji Kishi. Based on the manga series created by Ark Performance, the production represented a groundbreaking milestone for full 3D computer-generated character animation on Japanese commercial television. Combining realistic naval tactical maneuvering with fluid cel-shaded character models and a driving techno-orchestral score composed by Masato Kouda, the series demonstrated the expressive potential of complete 3D anime production.

“If you can take the odd character visuals, the sometimes smug tone of cliche'd teenage egotism against adult tyranny and the absurdity of it all, Arpeggio of Blue Steel makes for some nice popcorn entertainment.”
Read full review ↗“A strong final third largely balances out a weak start in this series about sci fi-enhanced WW II-era naval ships and the pretty female avatars which control them.”
