Story

Synopsis

This first Legend film retells the beginning of Takumi Fujiwara's story, following a teenager who has been driving his father's AE86 down Mount Akina before dawn for years without understanding that the routine has made him extraordinary. When a visiting racing team comes looking for local talent, his complete indifference toward racing turns out to be more intimidating to opponents than any amount of ambition would be. The retelling upgrades the original series' animation substantially throughout. Every morning run down the mountain has been training he never recognized as training.

The first film in the New Initial D Legend trilogy, produced by Sanzigen and Liden Films as a modern retelling of the franchise's original arc, this entry replaced the early series' dated CGI with contemporary techniques while condensing the story into feature length. Initial D's influence on drifting culture, Japanese street racing, and the legendary status of the Toyota AE86 is difficult to overstate, and its Eurobeat soundtrack achieved a cultural life entirely separate from the anime.
