Synopsis

Gunzou Chihaya and the crew of I-401 continue their campaign against the Fleet of Fog, an enemy force of ship-based entities whose mental models increasingly develop individual desires and loyalties of their own. This film continues the story past the television series with alterations, following Iona and the other Fog vessels as they negotiate what independence from their original programming actually means. Naval combat is staged at considerable scale, with strategy and negotiation carrying as much weight as firepower. Every negotiation matters as much as any exchange of fire between the fleets.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Produced by Sanzigen and adapted from Ark Performance's manga, the Arpeggio of Blue Steel films continue a series notable for using 3DCG animation throughout at a time when the technique was still uncommon for character work in anime. The franchise's naval combat sequences benefited considerably from that choice. Its premise, in which enemy warships develop personalities and question their own directives, gives the military action an unusual philosophical dimension throughout. Its early commitment to full 3DCG character animation was unusual for its production period, and the naval combat benefited considerably from that technical choice.
