Story

Synopsis

Three years following the catastrophic destruction of the mechanized homeworld, Earth has deteriorated into a desolate battlefield where human resistance fighters wage a desperate guerilla war against robotic conquerors. Now a hardened teenage partisan, Tetsuro Hoshino receives an urgent recorded distress message from his beloved traveling companion Maetel, beckoning him to board the Galaxy Express 999 once more. Fighting his way past imperial hunter units, Tetsuro boards the locomotive, encountering phantom trains, lethal armored cyborgs, and the enigmatic knight Faust. Journeying toward deep space, Tetsuro uncovers the tragic final secret behind human mechanized evolution.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Rintaro and produced by Toei Animation in 1981, this epic space fantasy serves as the definitive theatrical conclusion to Leiji Matsumoto renowned *Galaxy Express 999* franchise. Following up on the massive 1979 box-office champion, the film was celebrated for its dark, operatic tone, sweeping visual design, and fluid cel animation. The movie emerged as a massive commercial blockbuster in Japan, cementing Matsumoto melancholic, romantic sci-fi philosophy as an enduring cornerstone of classic anime history.
