Ghost in the Shell Watch Order: Oshii's Films a Complete Guide, in order
“Five Ghost in the Shell branches in one clean order, from the 1995 film to the 2026 series.”
Where do you even start with Ghost in the Shell? Answer: it depends which Ghost in the Shell you mean, because there are five. Each one has its own timeline, its own tone and its own take on Major Kusanagi. Think of it like Batman: same hero, a different Gotham every time a new creator picks up the pen. (Yes, five. I counted twice.)
The branches are Mamoru Oshii's two films, the Stand Alone Complex series, the Arise prequels, SAC_2045 and the 2026 series from Science SARU. They don't depend on each other, so no branch needs another one first. Inside a branch, though, the order matters, and that's what this page lays out.
Start with the 1995 film. It runs about 80 minutes and it's where the franchise began. After that, pick your flavour. Stand Alone Complex is the long-form route, with two 26-episode seasons and a feature-length finale. Arise is the prequel route, showing how Section 9 comes together. SAC_2045 continues the Stand Alone Complex world with a full 3D CG look. And the 2026 series is a fresh, manga-faithful reboot.
Now the skip list. The recap movies (The Laughing Man, Individual Eleven, Sustainable War and The Last Human) squeeze TV seasons into film length, and the Tachikomatic Days shorts are one-minute comedy bits. Arise: Alternative Architecture is a TV retelling of the four Border films, so watch the films or the series, not both. GITS 2.0 is the 1995 film with updated visuals and sound, so pick one version. (Choices, choices.)
At the end: watch the 1995 film, choose a branch, and follow it in order. That's 20 steps and 13 of them are core. Now go find your ghost.
The Oshii films (1995-2008)
Start here. Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film and the original Major Kusanagi story. About 80 minutes.
The 1995 film re-released with updated visuals and sound. Pick this or the original.
Oshii's sequel to the 1995 film. Slower and moodier, best watched after it.
Stand Alone Complex (2002-2006)
A fresh universe with its own story. Section 9 chases the Laughing Man case. 26 episodes.
Stand Alone Complex is its own universe, not a sequel to the films. You can start here without having seen either of them.
A 2005 recap movie of season 1. Skip it if you've watched the series.
Direct continuation, built around the Individual Eleven case. 26 episodes.
A 2006 recap movie of 2nd GIG. Safe to skip.
26 one-minute comedy shorts starring the Tachikoma tanks. Pure extras.
Feature-length sequel that closes out the Stand Alone Complex story. Watch after 2nd GIG.
Arise (2013-2015)
First of four Arise films, a prequel about how Section 9 forms.
Arise is a prequel in story time, showing how Section 9 comes together. It doesn't need the films or Stand Alone Complex first, so you can start here if you prefer.
Fourth and final Border film.
A 10-episode TV retelling of the four Border films. Watch this or the films, not both.
Feature film that follows the Arise story. Watch after Border 4.
SAC_2045 (2020-2023)
Set in 2045 in the Stand Alone Complex world, with Post-Humans as the new threat. 12 episodes.
SAC_2045 follows the Stand Alone Complex story and is set in 2045. It's a full 3D CG series made for Netflix, so the look differs from the earlier hand-drawn work.
A feature-length recut of season 1. Safe to skip.
Second and final season of SAC_2045. 12 episodes.
A feature-length recut of season 2. Safe to skip.
The 2026 series
A manga-faithful reboot by Science SARU with its own story. 12 episodes, summer 2026.
This series adapts the original manga and starts over, so it isn't a continuation of any other version on this page.
