Story

Synopsis

In 2008, high school girl Sakura Minamoto is fatally struck by a delivery truck while rushing out of her house with an idol audition application. Ten years later, she awakens as a sentient zombie in a creepy mansion, with no memories of her past life. She soon discovers that an eccentric, manic producer named Kotaro Tatsumi has resurrected her alongside six legendary deceased girls from different eras of Japanese history. Kotaro's grand mission is for this all-zombie idol group, named Franchouchou, to stage electrifying musical performances, overcome gruesome physical decay, and single-handedly save Saga Prefecture from cultural obscurity.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
MAPPA, Avex Pictures, and Cygames co-produced this hit original twelve-episode musical comedy anime, which aired during the fall 2018 season. Directed by Munehisa Sakai and written by Shigeru Murakoshi, the series surprised international audiences by masquerading as a dark horror project in early promotional trailers before revealing its true nature as an irreverent, heartwarming idol parody. Veteran voice actor Mamoru Miyano delivered a tour-de-force comic performance as Kotaro Tatsumi. The anime became a runaway viral hit, winning the Tokyo Anime Award Festival's Animation of the Year prize and generating real-world tourism across Saga Prefecture.
