Following a crushing defeat at the Grand Prix Final and several subsequent competitive failures, twenty-three-year-old Japanese figure skater Yuuri Katsuki puts his athletic career on hold, returning home to Hasetsu, Kyushu. While practicing at a local rink, Yuuri flawlessly mimics the advanced routine of his lifelong idol, five-time world champion Victor Nikiforov. A viral video of the performance catches Victor's attention, prompting the Russian legend to abruptly fly to Japan and volunteer as Yuuri's personal coach. Under Victor's charismatic guidance, Yuuri learns to express authentic emotional vulnerability on the ice, skating toward the Grand Prix gold.

Studio MAPPA produced this acclaimed twelve-episode original sports anime, which aired in fall 2016. Conceived and directed by Sayo Yamamoto and co-created by manga artist Mitsurou Kubo, the production became an international cultural phenomenon. Former competitive ice dancer Kenji Miyamoto choreographed all the skating routines, which were animated with breathtaking hand-drawn fluidity. Supported by Dean Fujioka's iconic opening theme song History Maker, the anime swept the inaugural Crunchyroll Anime Awards. The series won widespread critical praise for its nuanced depiction of athletic anxiety, artistic self-actualization, and groundbreaking, romantic LGBTQ+ relationship between its leads.

Maybe not a five star show if you aren't as invested in LGBT media as I am or if the art aspect doesn't immediately get your attention, but still highly recommended just as a story in its own right.
