Yuna Yuki belongs to her school's Hero Club, an organization dedicated to helping people with whatever they need, which occasionally involves being transformed into magical warriors to defend a barrier protecting humanity from entities called Vertex. The early stretch is bright, warm, and built around friendship, with the fighting treated almost as an extracurricular. Then the mechanism behind their power becomes clear, and the girls discover exactly what the system extracts from anyone who uses it, permanently and without any possibility of appeal. Every cheerful early episode becomes considerably harder to rewatch afterward.

An original anime produced by Studio Gokumi, Yuki Yuna is a Hero built its reputation on presenting itself as a cheerful magical girl series before revealing a framework that deliberately consumes its protagonists, drawing frequent comparison to Madoka Magica. Its Shinto-influenced mythology and its treatment of disability and sacrifice gave the deconstruction a distinct identity of its own. The franchise expanded into prequel films and additional seasons, and its bleakest material is generally considered its most effective. Yuki Yuna is a Hero is the first post-Madoka Magica series to be worthy of the name, and in spite of some lulls and a flawed ending is well worthy of your time as a result.
