Synopsis
Following their historic victory at the summer Inter-High national championship, the Sohoku High School road cycling team receives a prestigious invitation to compete in the Kumamoto Fire Country Mountain Race, an exhibition tournament held on the steep, volcanic slopes of Mount Aso. Captain Shingo Kinjou, Makishima, and Tadokoro prepare to ride alongside first-year sensations Sakamichi Onoda, Shunsuke Imaizumi, and Shoukichi Naruko for one final competition before the third-years retire. However, Sohoku faces ferocious competition from Hakone Academy, Kyoto Fushimi, and the host school Kumamoto Daiichi, led by local ace Shin Yoshimoto.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
During the first day of the race, Makishima receives unexpected news that he must depart immediately for England to attend university, forcing him to withdraw and leaving Onoda emotionally devastated. Sohoku falls behind during the volcanic mountain ascent, but Makishima miraculously returns on the final day, having rescheduled his flight to ride one last race with his team. Kinjou, Tadokoro, and Makishima lead a heroic three-man train that catapults Onoda and Imaizumi forward, allowing Sohoku to edge out Hakone Academy at the finish line for an emotional farewell victory.
