Story

Synopsis

Ai Ohto is a fourteen-year-old girl struggling with severe social withdrawal following the tragic suicide of her only friend, Koito Nagase. While taking a midnight walk, Ai is led by a mysterious disembodied voice to a hidden underground gachapon machine, which dispenses a magical Wonder Egg. Entering a surreal dreamscape when she sleeps, Ai cracks open the egg to reveal a vulnerable girl whom she must defend against grotesque monstrous trauma manifestations called Seeno Evils. Guided by the promise that saving enough egg girls can bring Koito back to life, Ai confronts harrowing psychological horrors.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
CloverWorks animated this original twelve-episode psychological fantasy anime, which aired in winter 2021. Directed by Shin Wakabayashi in his series directorial debut, the show was created and written by veteran live-action television screenwriter Shinji Nojima. The series earned enormous critical acclaim for its breathtaking visual cinematography, exceptionally fluid character animation supervised by Saki Takahashi, and sensitive, unflinching exploration of adolescent trauma, bullying, and grief. Despite production complications leading to a delayed special broadcast finale, the anime remains widely celebrated for its ambitious narrative depth and striking artistic imagination.
