Story

Synopsis

In an isolated rural village surrounded by dense forested mountains, high schooler Yoshiki lives alongside his lifelong best friend Hikaru. However, Yoshiki knows a horrifying truth that no one else suspects: the real Hikaru went missing on the mountain six months ago and died. The entity currently wearing Hikaru's face, clothes, and memories is an incomprehensible eldritch creature that crawled out of the mountain abyss. Despite knowing his friend is gone, Yoshiki cannot bear to lose the companionship, choosing to live beside the supernatural mimic even as strange psychological abnormalities and horrific rural curses begin devouring their town.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Mokumokuren's widely celebrated psychological horror manga serialized on Young Ace Up, the television anime masterfully conjures a suffocating summer atmosphere steeped in oppressive cicada hums and cosmic dread. Balancing poignant adolescent grief and queer intimacy against body horror and uncanny rural folklore, the story provides an unforgettable meditation on loss and monstrous affection.
