Synopsis
When strange alien-like beings known as Borderlanders begin living covertly among ordinary citizens in modern Earth cities, chaotic criminal incidents erupt across metropolitan areas. Former police detective Brian Nightraider is recruited into the Marginal Service, an undercover governmental paramilitary unit tasked with investigating clandestine supernatural activity. Alongside an eccentric squad comprising a retired military commander, a narcissistic medical genius, and an extraterrestrial operative, Brian undertakes high-stakes tactical deployments. Equipped with heavy firearms and unconventional equipment, the motley team battles dangerous rogue entities while preserving global public peace.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Produced by Studio 3Hz and directed by Masayuki Sakoi, *The Marginal Service* is an original action anime series that premiered in April 2023. Written by Kenta Ihara with character designs by Yoshio Kosakai, the show drew considerable initial intrigue for its tongue-in-cheek promotional campaign, which depicted the tough-guy cast stripped down to construction gear before revealing their tactical combat armor. Combining retro-inspired buddy-cop chemistry, over-the-top firearms action, and dry workplace banter, the series offers a quirky tongue-in-cheek spin on urban sci-fi conspiracy tropes.
