The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an anime-style film drawing on material from the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, set roughly 183 years before the events of the original trilogy. It was directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ultraman) and animated by Sola Entertainment, with Peter Jackson serving as an executive producer through WingNut Films alongside New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures. The English-language voice cast includes Brian Cox as King Helm Hammerhand and Miranda Otto reprising her live-action role as Eowyn in a narrating capacity. Released theatrically in December 2024, the film marked the first anime feature set in Middle-earth and drew a mixed critical response, with praise for its ambition and visual scope tempered by criticism of its pacing and narrative density.
