Story

Synopsis

Yasaburo Shimogamo is a tanuki living in Kyoto among humans, tengu, and other tanuki families, in a city where his father was eaten by a group of humans who hold an annual hot pot dinner. His family navigates succession disputes, old grudges, and a former tengu mentor who has become a difficult old man, while Yasaburo pursues an interesting life above all other considerations. The story treats supernatural politics and family obligation with equal seriousness and considerable warmth throughout. Every family obligation he dodges eventually finds its way back to him anyway.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Tomihiko Morimi's novel by P.A. Works, The Eccentric Family shares an author with Night Is Short Walk on Girl and The Tatami Galaxy, and it carries the same affectionate, specific relationship to Kyoto as a setting. Its unusual blend of yokai folklore, family drama, and gentle comedy earned it strong critical reception. The series is frequently recommended to viewers looking for character-driven storytelling with a distinctive voice rather than genre convention. Its specific affection for Kyoto as a living city gives the fantasy real grounding throughout.
