Story

Synopsis

Nello is an orphan living in poverty outside Antwerp with his grandfather and a dog named Patrasche, dreaming of becoming a painter and of seeing a Rubens altarpiece kept behind a curtain that only paying visitors may view. Poverty, false accusation, and a series of small cruelties from the community narrow his options steadily, and the story moves toward an ending that Japanese audiences have found devastating for generations. The film compresses the original television series into feature form. Every small cruelty accumulates until the ending arrives with genuine, unbearable weight.

Based on Marie Louise de la Ramee's 1872 novel and produced by Nippon Animation as part of the World Masterpiece Theater tradition, The Dog of Flanders occupies an unusual cultural position: relatively obscure in its Belgian setting but enormously significant in Japan, where the story's ending is a byword for tragedy. The town of Hoogstraten eventually erected a monument acknowledging Japanese tourists who visit specifically because of this adaptation's enduring emotional impact. Its ending is so culturally embedded in Japan that it functions as shorthand for tragedy.
