Story

Synopsis

Written and supervised by the Wachowskis alongside celebrated Japanese animation directors, this groundbreaking anthology explores the origins and hidden corners of the simulation war between humanity and sentient artificial intelligence. Across nine distinct animated short films, viewers witness the tragic historical dawn of machine civil rights in The Second Renaissance, a high-stakes zero-gravity virtual sparring duel in Final Flight of the Osiris, and a runner who shatters the sensory illusion through sheer athletic endurance in World Record. Each standalone tale offers thrilling perspectives on free will and systemic rebellion.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Released in 2003 as a landmark cross-cultural multimedia tie-in to *The Matrix Reloaded*, *The Animatrix* was produced through collaborations between Warner Bros. and premier Japanese animation studios, including Studio 4C, Madhouse, and Square Pictures. Directed by renowned anime auteurs like Shinichiro Watanabe, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Koji Morimoto, and Mahiro Maeda, the anthology earned universal critical praise. Its pioneering fusion of high-end CGI, traditional hand-drawn animation, and thought-provoking philosophical worldbuilding established it as one of the greatest animated anthologies in cinematic history.
