Story

Synopsis

Written by original manga creator Chuya Koyama, this theatrical prequel explores the pivotal emotional events four years prior to Mutta Nanba's recruitment into JAXA. While younger brother Hibito Nanba undergoes rigorous astronaut candidate training at NASA in Houston to become the first Japanese astronaut to walk on the Moon, older brother Mutta works a frustrating corporate automotive design job in Japan. Struggling with feelings of personal stagnation and professional mediocrity, Mutta reflects on the foundational childhood promise he made with Hibito under the starry night sky after sighting a UFO.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Hibito is assigned to backup legendary veteran astronaut Brian Jay, who mentors the young rookie on coping with the mortal dangers of space exploration. When Brian tragically dies during a catastrophic lunar lander test flight in Houston, Hibito is devastated by survivor's guilt. Mutta visits Houston to support his brother, reminding Hibito of their shared childhood oath to conquer space together. Reinvigorated by Mutta's fraternal devotion, Hibito successfully completes his lunar flight certification, while Mutta quietly vows to rekindle his own dormant dream of becoming an astronaut.
