“The good stuff caused me to go three stars here despite the show's usually archaic attitude toward women. The recommendations are similar shows (in theme and time frame) that were significantly better. Think of the recommendations as, respectively, silver and gold relics of their time, while Cobra is...pure brass.”

Space Adventure Cobra
Space Cobra · スペースコブラ · 1982
A rogue space outlaw with a Psychogun fights galactic pirate syndicates.
Synopsis
Johnson is an ordinary office worker living an uninspired suburban life in the future, until a trip to a dream-simulation cinema accidentally restores his suppressed memories. In reality, he is Cobra, a legendary rogue space pirate presumed dead after altering his facial features and wiping his own memory to evade galactic bounty hunters. Armed with the deadly Psychogun psychically integrated into his left arm and joined by his devoted gynoid companion Lady Armaroid, Cobra returns to high-stakes spacefaring adventures. Traveling aboard his stealth starship Turtle, Cobra outwits the ruthless Pirate Guild while chasing dazzling galactic treasures.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and directed by legendary anime auteur Osamu Dezaki alongside Yoshio Takeuchi, *Space Cobra* adapts the iconic sci-fi pulp manga created by Buichi Terasawa. Premiering on Fuji TV in October 1982 for 31 episodes, the anime is celebrated for Dezaki's signature directing techniques, including dramatic split-screens, dynamic Dutch angles, and dramatic postcard memory freeze frames. Featuring a groovy jazz-funk musical score composed by Kentaro Haneda and Yuji Ohno, the production blended Western comic swagger with French pop chic, establishing Cobra as one of anime's most charismatic antiheroes.

“A hero with a gun for a left arm gets involved in all sorts of hair-raising exploits in this sci fi action series from the early '80s. It stands up pretty well as high-spirited, fun-loving action fare accessible to adults as well as children.”
